Blackened Yellowtail with Turmeric


  • 4 yellowtail fillets
  • 2 teaspoons ground turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil


  1. Heat enough vegetable oil in a large skillet. Once the oil is hot, carefully place the yellowtail fillets into the skillet.

  2. In a small mixing bowl, combine the ground turmeric, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.

  3. Brush the yellowtail fillets with the olive oil, then sprinkle the spice mix over the fillets, making sure to coat them evenly.

  4. Heat a large cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Once the skillet is hot, place the yellowtail fillets in the skillet.

  5. Cook the fillets for 2-3 minutes on each side until they are nicely seared and blackened.

  6. Transfer the skillet to the oven, and continue cooking the yellowtail for an additional 2-7 minutes depending on the size of the filet, until they are cooked through.

  7. Remove the skillet from the oven and let the yellowtail rest for 1-2 minutes before serving.
